Sunlight & Skin: An Introductory Course on Photoaging

Developed under the guidance of Australian-trained and based dermatologists, this free online course offers an overview of skin structure and function, with a focus on the effects of prolonged ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. Participants will learn about both the impacts of UV exposure on skin health and appearance and, treatment options for managing UV damage, particularly including using retinoid-based approaches.

Outline & Components

Throughout this comprehensive course, you will gain a solid understanding of skin structure and function, along with the factors that contribute to skin aging and photo-damage. You will also learn about the characteristics of both over the counter and perscription products for treating photo-damage and aging skin and be equipped with the knowledge to support patients in safely and effectively using retinoid-based treatments. 

This course consists of 3 online topics:

Tutorial 1: The skin

Tutorial 2: Skin Aging and Photodamage

Tutorial 3: Retinoids

Assesments:

This course requires the completion of the self-diagnostic "check your understanding"quizzes and successful completion of the course quiz. 

Required Hours:

This course requires up to 10 study hours which includes completion of assessment tasks. This is a self-paced online course and does not have an associated teacher. You will have 16 weeks to complete your course from date of enrolment.

Outcomes

Course Learning Outcomes

At the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate: 

  • knowledge of the structure of the skin, its sub-components and their function. 

  • knowledge and understanding of the role played by intrinsic and extrinsic factors in skin ageing and photo-damage to the skin. 

  • understanding of the biological pathways involved in the conversion of alcoholic vitamin A (retinol) to its biologically active form acid form (retinoic acid). 

  • a sound knowledge of the type and action of the various retinoids used for the purposes of managing and treating skin aging and its outcomes. 

  • an appreciation of the characteristics of OCT and prescription-based products for the management and treatment of photodamage to and aging of the skin. 

  • Understanding of a framework to support patients in their safe and effective use of various retinoid-based products.

This course is designed for General Practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge of skin anatomy, the effects of UV radiation, and the role of retinoid treatments in managing sun damage.

This course is not accredited for RACGP CPD hours, however you will receive a statement of completion which you can submit to your relevant accreditation body.
